“Man, sometimes it takes a long time to sound like yourself.” ā Miles Davis
multiple clients have asked me about how to find your voice
I made a video about it, but let me also try and think out loud about it without referencing the video, and then i’ll post the video, and then i’ll summarize/synthesize
Your voice is your voice. I mean like, literally, with your speaking voice, but also your style, your expression. you can’t help but sound like you, you are always you. nobody can be you-er than you.
so… what does it mean to find your voice?
I think really the question is how do you stop suppressing your voice
children don’t really care about their voice, I think. they just laugh and sing and play and do whatever is natural to them
it’s only as you get a little bit older that you start to get socialized
kids who are homeschooled well or otherwise tutored by excellent tutors tend to have much more originality, much more personality, I believe because they haven’t been suppressed as much
school is a very suppressive thing, context, structure
everything is a remix. you develop your voice by remixing your favorite things. all learning begins with imitation. you copy what you like. you make changes as you see fit. it takes a lot of trial and error.
