i was thrilled with a good name recently but it’s one that needs explaining
so like 2010-2012 or so i did a lot of like, tim ferriss era blogging, quantified self, tracking my habits, productivity gtd type stuff
and i’m proud that i put in the effort into doing that, but i hate the categories titled productivity and gtd and so on. just looking at those labels annoys me, and they make up a huge chunk of my archives
then i was talking about it with S– i asked her what she remembers about that time, and she reminded me that i had this pre-FAN idea that was a more grandiose “legion of heroes” concept
self-actualizing nerds bla bla. and then it just struck me that “Legion” is a near-perfect name for it. perfect for me, needs a little explaining to others. “why are these posts tagged Legion” – I can explain, tell you the story, etc
some people will think at the outset that that’s a bad name but that’s not true. think about names like CDs. Compact Disc. because it’s smaller than the Not Compact Disc. basically nobody cares. it’s a CD. if you use a name often enough people graduate from needing it explained, because of context clues and so on. but you have to like the name enough to keep using it, it has to roll off your tongue, it should mean ~something to you
I recently remember telling someone that a good name is something that can acquire meanings over time. idk if that’s universally true, but it’s broadly true
