building the story

an idea has been tossing around my head for years and years and I plan to get started on it after my a’s- which is to write a singaporean story/stories that attempts to capture what it’s like to grow up in the 1990s, to make sense of your identity amidst global forces- lgbt rights, social justice, human rights issues, ‘postmodernism’ (whatever that is), tradition vs future, etc.

if you had to write your story, about your own life, or of others, about the struggle for identity, balance, acceptance and happiness in singapore- what would you talk about? what would be the most gripping chapter or scene? what would be a wrench-your-heart conflict, what would be a beautiful moment worth sharing?

    hello!

i’ve been reading your blog for awhile, and i have to say i love your blatant honesty when it comes to our country. the world needs more people (and writers) like you. (:

personally, as a 90s kid. there’s SO much that i could write about, but i’d probably choose to tell the story of how i fell in love with singapore after leaving her. i’ve lived overseas for six years to pursue my studies, but the worst part about falling in love with singapore is that each time i visit her again, she changes. so much. that i almost cannot recognise the country i love.

all the best with your exams – i heard about the GP comprehension passage that got everybody excited today, haha. looking forward to reading more of your entries soon. (:
