I once wanted to write a blogpost about marketing lessons from Weird Al. Here are some quick notes.
- Be different – When everyone plays guitar, play the accordion.
- Be relevant – a parody artist is always instantly interesting because people have opinions on the work that he’s referencing and remixing
There are some details about the way Mandatory Fun was released that were really genius, but I can’t remember the specific details. He had great lyric videos. He released things exclusively on different mediums. He did an AMA on reddit. He did 8 videos in 8 days, creating an event / anticipation.
In general I just think anybody that’s been around that long and still manages to stay relevant… has an understanding of how audiences, etc work in a way that’s worth appreciating.
